"Embrace Equality was born out of a personal journey of difference through circumstance and choice.
That journey has provided a passion for equalities that is an integral part of who I am.
This is very much the work that I have been called to do in my life’s journey."

As an Asian woman whose parents emigrated to England from Pakistan, my journey around equalities started before I was born in Manchester in 1968. My parents’ experiences of migration and integration have been passed onto their now second generation children. Their dream of going back home will now only be a dream as their adult children have settled in England as home.

These early experiences of difference, often racism, at times due to ignorance, left an important mark on my childhood. As a young person growing up between two cultures, one at home and one at school, I was left confused, fearful and anxious about where my identity lay. Was I a British Asian or an Asian Brit? Which cricket team was I cheering for?

Having decided to marry a White British man at the age of 25, I further explored the impact that this relationship had on the multicultural community within which we chose to live. Being in a cross cultural marriage brings its challenges, the biggest of which is having dual heritage children. Questions of language, food, religion and others are raised in considering where their sense of identity lies. My two children now have this journey of their own.
